Digital Mammography
|
Women who undergo routine mammograms at PMC's Breast Cancer Center have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography. PMC is very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection. Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is viewed and, more importantly, manipulated. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.
Digital mammography offers a number of other practical advantages and patient conveniences. Because there is no waiting for film to be developed it can significantly reduce the time patients spend in the breast center, as well as reduce the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure. Digital images are easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films, which can be misfiled or lost in transit.
Computer Aided Detection
To supplement this technology, PMC has incorporated digital Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) into its screening process. Digital CAD highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer. When activated, it flags abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer. CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist's judgment.
All mammography images are electronically transferred to Radiologists located right here in Houma. Interpretation is typically completed within hours. Screening mammography results are available within 24-48 hours. Diagnostic mammographies are interpreted before you leave the facility.
Physicians Medical Center is committed to the fight against breast cancer. If you would like to schedule a mammogram or have questions about this important breast health procedure, please contact the Breast Cancer Center at 985.858.3333.
